Yankees +119 4* MLB POD
The Yankees as under dogs in inter league play?  I’ll take it especially given the success the Yankees have had vs. Gio Gonzalez who posts a 7.27 ERA and a 1-4 record.  3 of those games he gave up 15 ER at home in Oakland where it is pretty hard to give up HR and hits.  Washington is not as pitcher friendly as Oakland so I see Gonzalez struggling a bit here again as the Yankees are 43-18 in their last 61 vs. LH starters as well as 40-16 overall in their last 56 inter league games.

Yankees starters have posted a 2.02 ERA over the last 12 and 2.92 over the last 20 as they have gone 16-4 matching what the Nationals rotation has done.  Phil Hughes has been part of that lately and he even pitched well on the road his last road start at Detroit going 9 innings giving up 1 ER.  He’s got a 3.50 ERA over his last 7 starts and his 8.34 K/9 2.38 BB/9 are worth a better ERA.  He has a tendency to give up a lot of fly balls and HR’s 2 per 9 innings.  The Nationals are a good match up for him.  They are 15th in HR this year and their ball park is 17th in HR/game. Chris Young of the Mets who gives up more fly balls (only 28% GB for career) than anyone recently threw 5 IP 2 ER 0 HR at Nationals Park.  Hughes should also benefit from facing an offensively challenged team in the Nationals who rank 20th in OPS vs. RHP.  Hughes has only faced two other teams ranked over 20th and he has a 2.08 ERA against them.

Yankees are scoring over a run better overall and on the road vs. LHP compared to what the Nationals are doing against RHP at home and overall.  Yankees bullpen is also better ranked 3rd in the league as the Nationals are 8th.  Additionally the Yankees bullpen is even better on the road, (1/2 run better than Nats at home) and they could be getting one of their best in David Robertson back today.  Lastly Gonzalez has 3 pitches.  When you face a team like the Yankees who are very patient and work counts in their favor you have to have more than 3 pitches to be dominant time after time.  I think that’s a large reason why Gonzalez has struggled vs. them in the past as he still this year has 3.72 BB/9.  Also he throws his fast ball 68% of the time and the Yankees are #1 by far vs. the fast ball.  If he’s not getting his curve or change up over the plate watch out.
