Adam Wainwright is a very bad match up for the Nationals who have already been struggling to hit the ball in this series. The Nationals score runs via the home run and it does not bode well for them against Wainwright who only averages 0.68 HR/9. Wainwright pitched like his old self down the stretch and should be fresh and ready to go for Game 5. Meanwhile Gio Gonzalez will have a hard time he gave up 7 BB’s in St. Louis and was very fortunate to get away with just 2 ER and get the win. This will be the third time the Cardinals see Gonzalez in the span of 6 weeks. Gonzalez is just not as good when he faces a team for a 2nd or third time. I found some valuable info on the internet in an article that allowed me to not have to look up the info, but Gonzalez has started 46 games where he saw the same team twice or more in the same season and in those 46 games his numbers are not that impressive allowing nearly 13 base runners per 9 innings and a 4.00 xFIP. The Cardinals have the #1 offense in the NL vs. LHP and feature plenty of bats that can do some damage when they work themselves into hitters counts. The Cardinals in reality have dominated this series outscoring the Nationals 23-7.
