I love Utah State as this is a great exposure game for their team and players in what their head coach has said he’s trying to make into a rivalry game. So you best bet his team will be pumped up. This team looks like a different team than a year ago and they should with players coming back from injuries and some JUCO transfers playing big dividends. First let’s start with BYU’s inability to score points with their offense.

BYU has been inefficient they lack any kind of a run game and when they lost last year they were held to just 2.6 yards per carry on the ground. Utah State is holding opponents to 2.25 ypc on ground this year and they held Auburn’s Dyer/McCalebb to 2.6 on 30 carries. JUCO Transfer Evan Huahulu is the anchor in the middle at 351 pounds and the defensive line is getting push ranked in the top 30 with 10 sacks already and 19 tackles for loss they were among the nation’s worst in that category last year. This defense has very good linebackers and a fast secondary to back them up. That means Jake Heaps has to win this game it’s entirely on his shoulders and I don’t expect him to be able to pull off winning by more than 1 TD. Heaps was 16-34 133 yds 1 INT last week in the win as it’s been the special teams and defense getting the job done but they will face a test tonight.

Utah State’s offense exploded in 2009 but took a step back a year ago. They get 3 weapons back that were lost to injuries a year ago. That includes Robert Turbin who had 180 yds and 115 the last two weeks and in 2009 had 1296 and 13 TD’s they also get receiving weapons back in Matt Austin and Stanley Morrison and QB Chuckie Keeton has the ability not to turn the ball over. In fact Utah St has only turned the ball over 6 times all season while BYU has turned it over 11 times. BYU which has registered just 4 sacks will have issues with this spread attack on Friday night. The stat I was most impressive with came from the Utah St defense they gave up 232 yards on 75 snaps to Colorado State, they are ranked 12th in total defense but 96th in scoring defense because of fumbles and OT games. They are 47.62% on 3rd down while opponents are 25.58% BYU is 38.3% on 3rd downs this year this could be the key to the game in what will be a close game.
